Did you know that around 40 million women will suffer from hair loss by the time they're 40?

It's definitely a myth that only men suffer from thinning hair! Women can experience the loss of their locks at many different stages of life, and if you're currently going through hair loss, then you're not alone.

Luckily, the world of treatments for female balding and alopecia has improved drastically over the past few years. With less of a taboo around the topic and more research being done, you can now solve your loss of hair easily.

Find out more in this guide to hair transplants for women, teaching you everything you need to know!

What Are Hair Transplants for Women?

Hair transplants for women work in just the same way as hair transplants for men. They're a way to cure female hair loss, allowing you to grow real hair in balding areas.

The transplant takes hair from another part of your body. If you have hair growth in other areas on your head, it'll usually be taken from here. These are hair grafts, and they'll be used to grow your hair in the areas where you're experiencing thinning.

Your surgeon will make tiny cuts on your scalp and place the hair grafts in them. It's almost like taking seeds from a plant and planting them elsewhere to create new plants!

Are Hair Transplants Painful?

No hair loss treatment is completely pain-free, but your discomfort will be managed. Your hair transplant will be done using general anesthesia (not sedation) so that you'll be awake during the procedure, but you won't feel a thing. You can also take mild pain relief following the transplant to minimize discomfort, and we'll give you plenty of advice on aftercare to prevent pain.

How Long Does a Hair Transplant Take?

If you're on the hunt for female alopecia treatment, you may be in a hurry to get it done! But, there's no rushing a transplant. Trust us; it's much better to take your time with a proper clinic that will ensure everything goes as it should.

You'll make contact first to discuss your experience with female hair loss and what you're looking for. Your clinician will then advise you on the best route, be it a transplant, scalp pigmentation, or something entirely different. You'll have a follow-up consultation to discuss the treatment further and then book in for your transplant.

How many hours the transplant takes will largely depend on the area of the scalp that needs to be treated. If it's your entire scalp, you may need more than one session. In general, though, you can expect to block out the best part of a day for the whole procedure.

Does a Hair Transplant Always Work?

A hair transplant is likely to see 10-80% of hair growth return in the months following the procedure. There are some cases where it won't take, but this isn't very common! You can also increase your chances of your hair transplant working by choosing a qualified, reputable surgeon and taking aftercare very seriously.

What's the Recovery Process of a Hair Transplant Like?

The recovery of a hair transplant is actually pretty quick! Most people feel comfortable heading back to work a few days after the procedure is done, although there's no pressure to do so. If you want to take a week off for everything to calm down, feel free to do so (as long as you can, of course).

For two weeks after your transplant, you need to be super careful of the area. Don't worry, though; we'll talk you through all of that. You should also avoid exercise in the month after your procedure just to be on the safe side.

If you have any non-dissolvable stitches after your hair grafts, you can expect these to be removed anywhere between 10-14 days after.

Aftercare You Should Be Aware Of

The first thing to mention about aftercare is that your new grafts will fall out. Don't worry though; this is totally normal and absolutely doesn't mean the transplant hasn't taken. In fact, it's a good sign!

You'll probably see your grafts fall out after just a few weeks. Once this has happened, you

should start to see new hair grow back in at the site of your grafts, which is the sign of a successful procedure.

In terms of aftercare, your surgeon will walk you through it all in detail. Some things to be aware of in advance include spraying your scalp with a saline solution to prevent infection and speed up healing and avoiding washing your scalp for 5-9 days after depending on the swelling and soreness you experience.

Stay away from activities that make you sweat, and try to avoid alcohol and smoking, which can slow down recovery.

You should also take plenty of time out to rest. It may sound a bit silly, but resting is going to be key in speeding up your healing time and helping your procedure take hold. So, binge that show you've been meaning to watch and get through your reading list - whatever keeps you lying down and taking a break is good!
